Last night at the very last minute I decided to take my 15 year old niece who is visiting us for the summer to the Portland Don’t Shoot Rally. This was to be a lesson for her on how to stand up for something greater than yourself.
Just earlier in the day, I gave her a lecture about watching too much television. I know, what teenager doesn’t watch the latest vampire movies. However, the reality is that for many young black people around the country they are dying at disportunate rates as compared to other ethnic groups. I told her how in the 1960’s black kids her age were being bitten by dogs, waterhosed, arrested and even killed for standing up for injustice.

To all my non black friends and moms. Take the time to understand before you judge and also take the time to reach out to a person of color and show some love. People are hurting and we need to show that we are in this together looking for a resolution.
