Its amazing how having a child will cause you to rethink everything you do in your everyday life. I have recently started preparing my 5 months old food everyday. Well actually every Sunday for the past two weeks I have stemmed and cooked a variety of veggies and fruits for her to try. What’s amazing is that she loves some the veggies and fruits that I never eat. Whats more amazing is that her first foods are those that both my husband and I should be eating all the time. But we don’t.
First Lady Michelle Obama healthy eating and active lifestyle programs encourages families to develop lifelong habits. Unfortunately, poverty and other disparities can aid in the lack of resources and ability to adopt this needed lifestyle. However, I believe there are always possibilities and opportunities to make sure we give our children the best possible chance towards a healthy future, and also add extra years to our lives and we start or continue to develop those same habits.
The attached article suggests that healthy eating is indeed linked to social status and wealth. There might be some truth to this research, however I can tell you where there is a will, there is a way. For example, try community gardens, co-ops and fruit markets. There is always a way to eat healthy without breaking the budget.
After reading this report, its no wonder our society is in the shape its in. I can only hope to give my little girl the healthy start that she deserves and as long as I am able to buy and make her food, I will certainly do so.
