image

It’s World Book Day and we wanted to share our favorite African-American books for kids.  Our daughter is only 20 months old, but she already has a collection of over 50 children’s books.  Our selection brings together our favorite authors that evoke song, culture,  pride and fun all together in one easy to read format for little ones.

We hope that you take time out today to explore some of our suggestions and other books today with your children.

Happy World Book Day!

We love this book because it includes a song that most everyone has heard before.  It has been recorded by country artists, pop artists, soulful singers and more.  The Author Kadir Nelson does a great job with bringing together colorful images that all children can relate with.

If you have ever wanted to share the stories associated with the Black/African American culture and history, this is the book that every parent should invest in.  This is a must buy book that is heartfelt, moving, and powerful.  Understanding the African American influence and culture is critical for every little mind.  Check out this book by Kadir Nelson

This is one of Zoie’s Favorite books.  Because she loves to dance we incorporate singing and dancing while reading this book.  As a parent I enjoy books that mix learning, passion and fun.  This book written by Debbie Levy takes us through a time-line of historical reference around the song “We Shall overcome” and she ties it in with historical context like the election of President Barack Obama.  This is an excellent read and great buy!

If you are a fan of the great Bob Marley, then you must buy this fun book written by his daughter Cedella Marley and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton.  This book is of course based on the song by Bob Marley “One Love” and they use awesome images to illustrate the connection to life, nature, family and friends.  If you have a toddler, this is a great book to read to get them to begin to recognize images in a fun and create way with song.

These 4 books will become a staple in your home and we hope that you enjoy each of them and share with other young people for generations to come!
